I've got a second hand p510 that I picked up with allegedly AIX 5.3 slready installed. I've got the unit already connected via serial port to my computer and I can see it booting up but it says that it doesn't have a boot device.

I go into SMS to look for bootable devices (I have two u320 disks in it), and all it can see are my two FCAL adapters, and CDROM. No matter what I do when I try to look for "all devices" or "disk all" or even "disk scsi" it doesn't seem to show me anything to add to the boot list.

I've gone ahead and booted up a diagnostics CD to try and see if the disks are seen, which they are but I'm not sure what to do from here. Any suggestions?

The firmware is smart enough to detect if a disk is bootable, if they do not show as bootable devices then they probably are not bootable.

As things like removable media devices, tape, CD, Etc. and fibre cannot be detected as bootable by the firmware they will always show as options to add to the boot list.

Either go back to who you bought it from and complain, or get your self a set of AIX install media and then you can learn the install process.
