I'm adding a 3584 Virtual tape library to the system.
Library was previously installed and working, then we had an issue with the VTL which requires me to remove and re-add it.

I didnt' install it the first time, and I'm somewhat new to AIX...

I removed the library and 4 drives through smitty then ran chgmgr and everything went away...

Now what? I try to add it through smitty and it doesn't see any libraries to add, I ran cfgmgr then did an lsdev -Cc tape and don't see this library.

any suggestions, even if it's a go read this guide dummy...
Thanks.

Just a small dummy suggestion!

Is the library on!?! One reason for not detecting it is it could be off or the cable is not connected to the system!

Regards,
Khalid

:) I appreciate the dummy suggestion, I wish that was the case... Yes library is on and presented to the host. It's a virtual library, so presentation is really the only control and I have verified that.

thank you though.

I tend to think that this may be an issue with the VTL, however what I'd really like to know is the process for detecting and adding this library.

If I'm correct in the process, then I can address this with the VTL support, but right now everything looks correct on that end.

Was there anything else I was supposed to do when I deleted those devices through smitty?

Are you on an LPAR? never mind, try to run the cfgmgr -v command to see the devices while they are detected! You might find the reason for not detecting the tape library from the errors displayed!

Khalid

OK, tried that and I don't see anything about smc or rmt devices. Does that mean that the server is not seeing the libraries presented to it. (as if they were un-zoned, or un-presented)?

Is this fibre attached? Does lscfg and lsdev show the adapters?

Is it directly attached? Or is there a SAN in between?

Fibre attached via SAN. lsdev sees the adaptors and I can see other luns presented to them.

no, from a symmetrix. What I'm trying to do is prove that the problem is in the VTL not on the server. I've got VTL support saying it looks ok, but my server doesn't see it.

I'm not an AIX admin, I'm just trying to determine if I'm performing the correct steps to see this library. i.e. cfgmgr, smitty tape, and in what order.

cfgmgr see's no rmt or smc devices when I run it. But I'm not sure if there is something I'm supposed to do first like add them to the config db with smitty....

If cfgmgr doesn't bring it up then it can't see it. Not a problem with AIX or unlikely that it is

Great, thanks for the help!

when do I run smitty? is that after cfgmgr sees the devices?
