Hi folks,

I'm a little bit confused with the "openssl situation" on one of our machines.

We installed openssh 4.6p1, which requires an rpm package of openssl. So we installed version 0.9.7L

However now I've discovered that our samba 3.0.24 seems to also have installed some 0.9.8c openssl version as well.

Both version are residing in different (!) directories ...

Is there a problem with that ?
Do we need both versions ?
If not, how can we tell both applications which openssl version to use ??? Or how can we tell the system which openssl is the "active" one that should be used for all applications that need it to run ?
Where else could openssl be necessary ?
Could there be a conflict ?
Or is neither version of openssl working correct as long as 2 versions are installed in the system ?

What would be the correct reaction to this situation ?

Thanks in advance !

Regards
Thomas

i'm guessing your samba installation came with it's own version, not an uncommon thing to happen.

having two versions on a box in and of itself is not an issue. i believe that the ssh binaries from IBM will look in a certain location for the ssl libs, presumably where it expects the ssl rpms to go when they are installed.

i'm not familiar with samba, but if you compiled it from source then you should be able to tell it which ssl lib to use if you just want to settle on one set of libs.

the only issue i see is keeping track of which ssl libs you are using for each application that calls them.

Just wondering have you tried to run openssl after installing it? If it is working and it didn't effect samba functionality then why worry?!?

Maybe the rpm comes with a special version of openssl for samba!

Khalid

Everything seems to be working fine ...
But I'm not sure whether there are any other programs running on the machine that need openssl and where they might be looking for openssl ...
It's not contained in the path variable so the programs have to know where to look.
