probing monitors

This is something a little different. Trying to find a way I can probe a monitor on a system.
Attempting to do 2 things,

a. Get a good inventory of the system
b. Setup my own x-config

I can get the video card info no problem. I suspect that the monitor can only be probed via the video driver, but was hoping that someone might have a good way to grab the info from the display---
