I've got out asa writing to a syslog server running on win2k3 box. Going through the logs, there's this one column that obviously means something, but I cant figure out what it is. Here's a clip from one of my logs:

<164>Feb 28 2009 07:03:52: %ASA-4-400010: IDS:2000 ICMP echo reply from 192.168.1.1 to 10.1.1.2 on interface outside

What is that "<164>" and what does it mean? Every single message that is logged has "<164>" beside it, and occasionally I'll see <161> logged when someone uses the ssl/vpn. what are those numbers??

Thanks!!

It could mean the priority such as Info, Notice, Warning, etc. What syslog are you running??

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

That was my first thought, but I'm use to the 0-7 type of priority/severity.

Running the PIX Syslog Server from Cisco.
