I am running MS Exchange 5.5 on an NT 4 server. The priv.edb file is taking up 2.32 GB on the C: drive which is 4.0 GB in size. I have 100mb free space on the drive. Is it possible to compact the Priv.edb and how.

Hiya,
Exchange 5.5 is supposed to clean up after itself fairly well, but if you are running out of room, check you Event Viewer for an Event 1221, should have one everynight. That will tell you how much space an offline defrag will free up.
Just FYI, my priv.edb was 42G, event viewer claimed I would get 25G back (lot's of layoffs :( ) Anyway, after all was said and done, it is down to 11G! One tape backups!
If you decide to do an offline defrage, checkout the Microsoft article ID: Q192185 Very easy to do.

I am having same problem. My Priv.edb is 9GB and/but disk administrator says I have 12% free space available. The 12% doesn't seem to change. I tried to set off MSExchangeIS manually and I do see event 1221 but not for the Priv.edb (see it for Pub.edb & dir.edb)
So why isn't the Priv.edb being defraged?? No error/event messages to give me any clues. A manual defrag is out of the question since I do not have the free space to do it.
Any suggestions/clues? T.I.A.
