Printing Word 2000 problems

We are doing a Windows 95 to 2000 upgrade on all of our workstations. We are having some strange issues with printing Word 2000 documents. We are on a Novell Network using 8.02 client. We are printing to HP 5si MX using envelope feeders and 2000 sheet paper trays. Our problems are mostly printing envelopes. Using the updated PS drivers, the workstations sometimes print to the envelope feeders correctly, sometimes they will by pass the envelope feeder and print to another tray, even if none of the printing options have been changed. Each document behaves a little differently. If printing has been successful, doing the same thing with the same Word Doc and print setttings the next day will be unsuccessful. This is just an example of the type of anomolies we are seeing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey Dom,

You may want to make sure you are using the latest build of the Novell client. Novell is notorius for re-releasing a client with a different Build and that may be one of the problems you are encountering.

The other thing you might want to do is build an NT 2000 workstation from scratch without performing an upgrade and perform the test.

Also, make sure you downloaded all (lots of) patches for the win 2000 OS and the Office 2000 applications. You will find that it will probably take you a few hours to get all the patches installed in the proper order. Be careful with the office applications, SR1 needs to be put on before anything else. Good ol MS, you think that as they release new patches, that they would just incorporate the old to make things easier for the admins. NOT!!!

Do the OS Patches first, followed by the applications patches.

Its going to be painful. I watched one of our IS guys here do this to a NEW win2k machine, and it took him about 6 hours to get all the patches installed.

Yeah I'm finding out that an upgrade for Win2k and Office2k with all the patches is taking almost 8 hrs. I was considering building one from scratch, and using it to ghost, but there are too many people with too many types of software for me to do that effectively. After a little investigation, I found that although MS, HP and Novell do not report this problem on their websites, there are alot of companies that are encountering this problem. I guess we'll have to wait for the manufacturer to come up with a fix. The users are getting used to it now and are dealing with it for the most part. Migrations are never a 1-2-3 process anymore(as if they ever were ??? lol). Such is life. Good to hear from you Mark!
