I am very new to using linux and have been given the task of evaluating the use of a version of linux called Ubuntu. Unfortunately my evaluation is to be based on how well it will play with our windows network.

Anyway I have installed ubuntu and have configured samba to run on this system. I'm able to share files between networks but I'm having a devil of a time being able to print to network printers.

I have both smb and cubs options available to me but I'm not sure how to go about using these to access the printer(s). Below are some specifics and any help you all can offer would be appreciated.

IP address of printer 192.168.1.250
Share Name IT laserjet
printer type HP Laserjet 4 plus

Domain : browns.local
server : kosar1
IP : 192.168.1.10

Linux box name linuxtest

Actually I have tried that but no such luck.

I have it setup with CUPS with a url of:

ipp://192.168.1.250

but it is simply telling me that the printer is busy, though I've check the spool on the server and it is not in use.

what does lpstat tell you ?

lpstat -o printername

lpstat-o gives me the printer name of

Laserjet-4-Plus-5

lpstat -o Laserjet-4-Plus-5

gives me the following:

lpstat: Unknown destination "Laserjet-4-Plus-5"

so you havent added the printer correctly. look through the config and see what name its known as, and send prints to that,

Which config file are you talking about? I am trying to set this up to send to an IP address and that is what I'm pointing to in cups.

but you associate a name to the ipaddress:port combination. what queue name did you give it ?

To my knowledge I didn't give it a queue name.

I used the System/Administration/Printing and followed the prompts.

Selected the printer type which is Network Printer (cups (ipp))

entered the urI: 192.168.1.250 <click forward>

Selected the Manufaturer (HP)
Selected the Model (Laserjet 4 plus)

clicked apply.

I then got the name I provided earlier with the lpstat -o command.

duh sorry, missed the point entirely (ipp).

I dont normally add them as ipp, normally as remote printers, this makes life so much easier for administration.

I'm not your man for explaining ipp printing in linux. if you try it as a rmeote printer instead, maybe I an help you lots :)

I'll have a play when i get into work tomorrow, without looking at the interface I cant say for sure what to hit, but I think I have an ipp enable printer available so I'll pass the day doing nothing important :)

Does the printer actually support ipp?
does it also need any addition to the url such as /ipp/ (ipp://ipaddress:631/ipp/ or ipp://ipaddress/ipp or ) theres a whole bunch of variables here.

I set up a HP Laserjet on ipp and the reuired path was:

This is a 4600 series, if thats of any help. its then available from the server.

I used the cups web interface to configure this printer, located at available *only* from the server desktop, it required the root user and pass. It seems the default cups config s very restrictive. This was not done on ubuntu, but cups and its interface is pretty standard.

when setting up the printer, the first info required is:
Name:
Location
Description.

The name supplied is used as the queue name used to send prints to from the server.

In my frustration I went back and tried to setup my printer again using smb and apparently the two or three other times I tried it I must have used the wrong password. Anyway I now have it up and running.

I did however try the address as you have suggested but still had no luck as it was showing the printer idle, but telling me it was busy when sending a test print.

thank you so much for all of your help though.
