Hello,

We have an HP Laserjet 4050.

We have 3 printers pointing at 1 print device.

Each printer represents a tray.

If we try to print to the printer that represents Tray 2, it is going to the Envelope Tray(Tray 1). The other printers work, this is isolated to the printer that represent Tray 2, on this HP Laserjet 4050. We checked all of the tabs, everything is assigned to Tray 2. It is shared from a Windows 2003 server. (Also, sometimes taking the envelopes out of tray 1 seem to force it to Tray 2, but not always).

Thanks.

Are you specifying a paper size in the print job? Some microsoft applications override the driver settings. Try changing the paper type in tray2 to be different from tray1, it may be 'autoswitching' for you in an attempt to be helpful

Thanks for the reply.

This is occuring outside of the applications.

I am having this problem in control panel > printers, just trying to send a test page to Tray 2 on this hp ljet 4050.

When I got to printer properties > print defaults, there is a second field for the tray. It shows auto select & is greyed out. Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry but I'm confused.

Ok.

Now you lost me. You have 3 4050's? What is the device a PC?
Each printer represents a tray.
Now I'm really lost. So here is a shot in the dark: Have you tried replacing the print driver?

We have 3 printers pointing at 1 print device" is a little confusing.

It sounds like you've got three different shared printers on that server to one locally connected LJ4050 with each configured to a specific tray. Is that correct? If so, then
the problem is likely confined to settings of that drawer on the printer itself.

Is it happening from each of the computers that print to it? It may be worth setting a fresh intall up on another computer just to see.

Also, do you have any of the exapnsions for this printer? Meaning the additional trays, or is it just the standard trays one and two?

There's four things that can contribute to a problem like this, and I'll leave it up to you to to decipher which it is.

Paperhandling Menu on the printer.
It's likely that the paper type and/or size is incorrect on the printer itself. In this case, regaurdless of the driver or application settings, it will only print from the first drawer that matches the requested type and size. If there is none, it'll ask you to load it in tray one.

Maybe you can turn overide A4/Letter on.

If it's asking for tray one, then this is the most likley option.

Printer Driver
The driver on the server could be corrupt, but more likely it's either using the wrong driver type or set to a specific tray on the paper handling menu. Also, in most cases, I'd use a LJ 4050 PCL 5 driver. You only need PCL 6 for higher end graphics or tables. It's a little simpler and seems to provide less problems. The default settings should work just fine.

Printer Drawer
Also, I'd check the slider in the drawer itself to make sure it's in the correct possition. I've seen those get broken and not be able to retain it's position

Application Settings
You've stated that you've already checked this one

Hope this helps

Good Luck!

Chris

We wrote a VB program to select the tray for the first page and the rest. It solved the tray selection driver does not work with XP correctly.

Never give up never give in.

There are no short cuts to anything worth doing :)

We were able to resolve this issue.

When we setup printer priority, one of the printers was setup wrong in the printer properties.

We went to printer prop > Gen Tab > print pref button > paper quality tab > source is: (When we put the correct tray next to source, everything worked.).

Thanks for your assistance.
