My application uses a .ini file to define printers and their locations. I can print to any printer on a network which is connected to a pc on the network using teh naming convention: printer_name on \\PC_name\share_name . Some jetDirect printers have been added to the network now. How can I print to one of these. I've tried just about every combination of naming schemes and can't seem to make it work. Help

I believe that you may need to setup an IP printing port on the computer(s) in question.

Jetdirect printers connect directly to the network using their own NIC. I have an HP JetDirect printer on my network. The idea is to install the JetDirect printer on an NT server system by creating a port at the time of installation and share the printer. On the client computers add the shared JetDirect printer and it should work fine like it's installed on the local system. If your application uses win.ini, the newly added printer makes an entry in its [ports] section using UNC. That's the case of a shared JetDirect printer. But you can install the Printer on local computers, haven't you tried? Another aspect of these printers is the protocol. Check which protocols are you using? Elaborate more if it doesn't help.

Unfortunately my application doesn't use win.ini for its printer information. Our document distribution system uses a separate ini file which matches the recipient (a doctor) up to a printer in a specific location. The application issus a print command for all documents from the transcription server across the network. Printers attached to specific PC's on the network work fine, however printers now on jet direct boxes do not and print to the default printer.

tvhasben,

Here's a quick rundown of how to set up Jet Direct. Hope it might help:
1) Go to a server, and go into the Printers control panel. When you choose to add a new printer, there will be a button to add a new port.
2) Choose HP Jet Direct and you will invoke a wizard that will ask you for the IP address of the Jet Direct card and some other questions.
3) After finishing, a port will be created on that server for the Jet Direct connected printer. So, when a user goes to add a printer, they use \\server_name\printer, the box will route the job to the appropriate IP address.

Make sense? Hope it helps. Good luck.

I also am tring to print using HP Jet Direct. On step 2, I see no HP Jet Direct choice.

You need to get your Jet Direct media that came with the card, and install the software on your server. It will install the necessary printer port drivers on your server. Also, don't be misguided in installing this on a workstation if you have a large number of users printing to it. Workstation only supports up to something like 10 concurrent connections. If you have the whole world printing to it, you'll open a lot of problems.

tvhasben,
All you have to do now is to edit the .ini file which your application is using with any text editor and make the necessary changes. Use UNC path like \\Computername\jetdirect_printer and it should work. If it doesn't, elaborate more on your application and the .ini file. And as I mentioned earlier check the protocols you are using.

If you enable TCP/IP printing , and simple TCP/IP services, you can add a local port : LPR port,
just type the IP address of your HP jetdirect, and you can use this port on your server.
Now install a printer on this port, and share it
(on your server)
For example : HP Jetdirect : 192.168.0.5
Your server : 192.168.0.1
Create a LPR port 192.168.0.5
Install a printer on this port, and share it as HPprinter

your clients could do a
net use lpt1: \\192.168.0.1\HPprinter

When your client prints something to LPT1, it will be redirected to the HP Jetdirect port and it will print... Peter Van Eeckhoutte
