I am fairly new to Citrix and can't seem to find out how to setup a local printer. I have a user connecting fine to Citrix but she has a local printer. The connection to the local printer is setup corectly but when connecting to one of our published applications, she cannot print to her local printer. The check box in the Citrix Connection configuration to force printing to a default printer is checked.

According to the manual (pretty bad writen manual I should say) the remote printer will have a port \\..\DLPTx.. what ever this means. I don't have such port and no option to select.

Thanks

ssphoenix,

Citrix should be handling the printer redirection for you. The only time it will not is if the printer driver name that the user is using on the desktop does not match any driver names on the server. Please note that I'm not refering to the Printer Name, but the DRIVER names. That's what has to match.

SOLUTION::
Install the same print driver on your Citrix Server that the user is using on the desktop.

There are further things you can do, but this would be the first thing I would try since you are new to Citrix.

By the way...can you post the version of Citrix and Windows you are using if this does not work for you. Service Pack level would help too.

In order for Citrix printing to work, I would check these things:
1. Make sure that the printer is set up and works ok for the client and is set as a default printer.
2. Make sure that the Citrix server has the printer driver set up. The name of the printer driver set up on the Citrix server must be exactly the same as what said on client (capital letter, space, and all)
If 1 and 2 is positive and if the printer driver gets on ok with the Citrix server(NT4 TSE has problem with quite a number of printer drivers), the server should auto detect the printer when the client connects and she should be able to print.
If the printer is not auto detected it could be that the Citrix server does not have this printer driver installed or installed but the name is not exactly the same.
If the printer is detected but user can't print or when user tries to print, the server crashes, it's often because the printer driver does not get on with the Citrix server.
with the last 2 cases you will have to look at the file wtsuprn.inf (in system32 folder) and try using the substitute printer drivers.
Hope this give you some ideas.

I am using Citrix 4.0 with pack6.

When I install the printer drive on the server, which port to I choose? LPT, COM?

Thanks

Choose any port but DO NOT PRINT A TEST PAGE....

Once you install the printer. Write down the exact name of the print driver. (Again, not printer name, but PRINTER DRIVER NAME )

You can then delete the printer at this point. The drivers will stay on the server, but you should not keep the printer their since it is really not connected to an LPT or COM port.

Altough a bit strange, it actually worked. Many thanks to everyone's help.

Still another printing question. I have about 6 other printers. Is it possible to remove them? You've mentione that I should. How is it going to work if I ever need to modify them?

Thanks

On a Citrix server, add a dummy printer on LPT port with any driver. When you want to install a new printer driver on this server, just change the driver for this dummy printer (by locating the .inf file coming with the printer driver). You can install most printer drivers this way (all HP drivers) only some Epson printers, I found, required you to install the printer utilities.
Hope this helps.
