Printing through server 2003 is slow

So I've got a Canon iR 5000 that is hooked up to the network and my Server 2003 file/print server prints to it VIA IP. In the past 3 weeks, for seemingly no reason, the printer has started being problematic when printing PDF's. I've tried using the latest PCL5 & PS3 drivers and it's always the same. My "test" document is a 21 page PDF. I can see the document in the print que on the server and can watch it chew on the for a few minutes, a few bytes at a time (this is a 2mb document) error out, then start chewing on it again until it's manually canceled from the print que. As a test I printed directly to the IP of the printer (bypassing the server all together) and boom, 21 page PDF is in and out of the printer que in under 5 seconds with no errors. That leads me to believe the problem totally exists on the server. I've deleted the drivers and port from the server and recreated them (using the latest drivers). Made sure there was plenty of space on the C drive for the print spool (I think 11 gig of free space on C should be enough). No matter what I do it's always the same. I can print directly to the printer with no problem, but printing through the server to the printer causes errors. Other printers that run off the same server don't seem to have the issues.
Any ideas?

setting the source machine to print to it by IP would take the Print server out of the loop and therefore would be faster.

On the print server, have you tried to set the printer to "print directly to printer" (basically no spooling?)
