I have a commercial program that outputs simle text pages, each page is columns of numbers. The format of each page is identical, just the numbers are different. I would like to read this file and apply some basic formatting, like bold and/or italic to certain text elements. Do I insert PS commands into the file, or do I insert the text into a PS file. I am totally new at this. Also, I eventually want to add gray shading to parts of the report, I am thinnking I can create a form to be downloaded to the printer for that.

Any help is appreciated,

hello

You put text inside PS file, because PS has its own particuliar syntax.
If you were placing PS inside a flat file, this flat file cannot be readen by gs (or any other PS reader)

==> have a look at : it can help you a lot.
