Just in case you do have editing permissions for the file(s), you could select the touchup object tool, click on the background to select, then right mouse click and select delete. This should leave you with a white background, but if everything on the slide is a single object it will get rid of the lot. Ahhhhh, I see you have a machine that goes Bing!
I posted this question for a friend who doesn't have the full Acrobat version so it really limits possibilities. On the other hand, I did try what you suggested but although all permissions are enabled, the "delete" option after page right clic isn't.
