There are some HP printers that seem to be incompatible with Citrix. I have had direct experience with the HP 800-890 series printers and they seem to have a tough time printing via citrix.
I ended up calling HP tech support and was told that the drivers for some of the 800 series printers for Metaframe were "flakey." By that they meant - sometimes it will print correctely, other times it will print garbage, and other times it won't even print. Guess it depends on the alignment of the stars.
You can also expierment with drivers - for instance you may try another HP driver. You may find that the driver you have does not work, but another one will. It is all a guessing game!
Like I said this has been my experience with the 800 series printers from HP. I am not sure about the other HP printers, but I will not buy any more HP printers to use in Citrix.
You may want to look into another brand for consistency and also make sure that they have reliable drivers for Terminal Server.
Pinkman is absolutely right. Some HP DeskJet drivers simply do not work under Microsoft Terminal Server (Citrix Metaframe is just an extension to the Operating System, and does not handle printing directly).
I have posted on this subject several times - I think it's time I did an FAQ on it!
Forget it! We killed ourselves trying to fix our problems printing in Citrix.
Recently we purchased Uniprint from Future Link. This software gets installed on the server. You then install a small client application along with Adobe Acrobat. Clients can print to ANY printer they have installed locally without requiring drivers to be installed on the Citrix server. It's a wonderful think.
I don't know why your Citrix guy is saying not to load print drivers onto a MetaFrame server - if they're not there, then the server cannot handle the print jobs!
Maybe he meant that you do not attach printers to a Citrix server, or that it is best to set up printers on a separate file/print server and map the Metaframe server to it.
Either way, a driver needs to be on the Metaframe server so that the session can utilise that make and model of printer - even if the driver is mapped to another via the wtsuprn.inf file.
If you install printer drivers on your Citrix box, you are asking for problems, especially on Win2000. Use one of the Microsoft drivers that installs with the OS if at all possible, or pick a generic one like "HP LaserJet 4". Newer HP drivers for network printers are probably OK for Win2000, but if you're installing a slightly dated vendor-supplied desktop printer driver from CD onto your Win2000 box, you've been warned!
We have fairly good luck with the deskjet series. There are "lite" versions of the drivers for the deskjets. These drivers are just the basic drive. It does not have any of the "tools" like a regular deskjet driver does. No alignment setup or anything like that. Plus the deskjet looks for bidirectional signals for things like ink cart. levels, print notification. The lite versions don't have this and if the deskjets are on the network or hooked to the back of a work station make sure the workstation also has the same driver loaded. Don't ask me why but it has worked for us. The other thing we do is on the server is to actually setup the deskjet and choose lpt1 and setup the driver and then in my computer screen delete the printer profile. We even have users work connect to citrix from home and print there apps there without any trouble. This seems to work for any remote deskjet or off brand laser printer. We found this out from sheer trial and error due to printing at home demand. Good luck.
