I am running Mac OS 9.1 using Quark Xpress 5 and Adobe Acrobat and Distiller 4.0. It appears that every pdf I create, whether by exporting as a pdf, saving pages as a PS file and converting through Distiller, or creating through the print command, I cannot print. I get "The document could not be printed, there was a problem reading this document(12).
I have no idea why or how this started to happen, but it came on out of the blue some weeks ago.
Has anyone experienced this issue? And is there a solution?
Thank you
Mark

There are two main causes for problematic PDF creation or printing.

1) Font errors - either a corrupt font or one that is not licensed to be embedded. You can get around some font licensing/embedding issues if you try Distiller 3 - which did not seem to deal with this restriction. If you created a PDF successfully but cannot print it, go to the documents properties info in Acrobat and check out what fonts were (or were not) embedded.

2) Placed EPS errors - try deleting placed EPS files from your document one by one and try to print each variation. One of your EPS files may be disagreeable with the PostScript interpreter of your printer or Distiller.

Acrobat 4.0 "out of the box" was a bit flakey, to say the least. I had plenty of problems with it like you describe -- one day it would work fine, the next it wouldn't. Be sure to install the 4.05a updater CD-ROM from Adobe so you can correct the problem. Then, I'd suggest downloading the patch for 4.05a (name? version? should be easy to spot on Adobe's Acrobat download area), as well as installing the latest Adobe PS printer drivers. And there's already a patch for Quark 5.0 -- toss that into the mix, too. FWIW, I just set up a new G4 last week with the same combination, patched everything, checked out the same stuff JIMOBLAK mentions in his post, and we haven't had any problems. If you haven't already checked it out, Adobe should have some step-by-step configuration guides for PDF workflow in Quark on their support site -- at least they did back when I was learning all of this on a similar setup, but with Quark 4.x. Hope that helps!

Thank You - you guys were very prompt,I hope I can come up with solutions this quickly in the future.
