Printing PDF (over WAN) results in huge files

Our users work on a central MS Terminal Server system. They open relative small PDF files on the TS. But printing such a file results in a huge data transfer over the WAN to the local printer.
Is it possible to prevent this?

We used to have Canon multi functional printers (with this problem). We switched to Ricoh MFP's (for other reasons), but they also have this performance killing issue.

How 'small' are the PDF files ? Are you printing individual files, or groups of them? Are you printing them from Acrobat Reader, or from Windows Explorer, or a custom application ?
How is the speed when you print a file type other than PDF from a Terminal Services session to the same MFP? The problem might be an issue in the network settings -flow control, speed and duplex, etc, in the Terminal Server, the MFP's the workstations, and the routers. Everything needs to match, or you can really make things drag under load.
The fact that this is across a WAN is a red flag -how many stations are accessing the Terminal Server across the WAN? You may need a fatter 'Pipe' - more WAN bandwidth. You may be having bandwidth saturation. Any chance of moving the Terminal Server to your side of the WAN ?
