printing howto

I would be interested in discovering the arcane
art of printing. As it seems that everyone is
relying upon ready built code, I can find very
little documentation with builder or on the net.
may be I am not asking jeeves the correct question.

I did find some code here

this would seem to get me going but I cant get it to work.

I have added the mfc path to the include path.

Is there some code I could look at that would get me started
without the mfc stuff.I can print text and I can print bmp
but not at the same time.

any pointers to a good book or tutorial would be appreciated.
