printing goofs after OS upgrade to W2000 SP2

In configuring the Laserjet 4 printer, each page prints a smeared line down the middle. How do I change printer's protocol? (i'm assuming there is such a thing). When do I know it's the cable itself, and not a setting having to do with the OS change?

Do newer printers AUTOMATICALLY adjust to varying Operating Systems?

This sounds like a Tonner catridege ? Print Roller issue and not a cable or software issue.

i would check the Tonner cartridge roller and the internal rollers on the printer.

great advice! turns out a new print cartridge solved the problem. ...at least temporarily; may be a bad "fuser"
