I am trying to print from RH 7.3 to Windows 98, which has the HP Laserjet 4 connected to it. I know the printer is shared and prints correctly because other Windows 9x machines on the network can print to it; however, printing from Linux just doesn't work. I am using printtools to configure the networked printer. An lpq command tells me there has been an error printing to the printer:

Printer: HPLaserJet4@host-name
Queue: no printable jobs in queue
Server: no server active
Status: job 'root@host-name+475' removed at 17:42:40.485
Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size Time
error username@host-name+808 A 808 ERROR: job removal requested

(usernames and hostnames has been changed to protect the innocent)

I don't know what the error message really means. The username and password combinations are correct and I am running encrypted passwords. The SAMBA account user/password also exists for the user. By the way, I did not yet try to connect the printer directly to the Linux machine because linuxprinting.org says the printer works "Perfectly", so I did not bother.
