Printing from AS400 to Windows NT4 Printer

The problem is as follows:

Several print jobs are sent from an AS400 printer every night to a printer setup on a Windows NT4 SP6 server. This printer is paused and has a separate spooler directory set up for it. The spooler directory is subject to automated house keeping, so files that are over 4 days old are deleted to prevent excessive directory growth. The Reason this is set up is to catch certain disaster recovery information needed in case the AS400 goes down. The thinking is that should the DR data be required, it could be released form the print queue by unpausing the printer and printing it to an suitable printer on the network by selecting a suitable IP port for that printer. There is an LPD listener running on the NT server on port 515 and the jobs sent from the AS400 do build up in the selected print queue on the NT server. The spooler directory is also populated with the correct .spl and .sph files. However, when the printer is unpaused, jobs drop off the queue and leave the spooler directory but there is no output from the print device. I have managed to capture some of the data by printing to a text file. Most of this is in Hex format and to make it more readable it has to be converted using a utility called File View. This is not an ideal solution as the DR data is required to be routed to a suitable print device anywhere on the network convenient to anyone who needs it. Has anyone had a similar problem or does anyone have any suggestions? So far I have been able to re-route printers on the NT server by choosing an alternative IP port, changing the printer driver and sending test prints. Most of the printers used are HP.
Any help would be most appreciated.
