Printing complex paths stalls 1

We have documents that have fairly complex paths for a drop shadow. The document will print from Quark Xpress 4 correctly on an HP Color Laserjet 8500 (PS Version: 3010.104; Revision: 1), but seems to stall indefinitely on
either a Color Laserjet 4550 (PS Version: 3010.107; Revision: 0), or a LaserJet 5100 (PS Version:3010.107; Revision: 0).

I'm wondering if the issue is the postscript version (these all use emulation) or possibly the drivers. The problem is not installed memory as the 8500 (where it prints) has only 8MB whereas both the other printers (where it doesn't) have more than 64MB.

Any suggestions on how to isolate & correct this will be greatly appreciated.

It could be PPDs. I assume you're running the latest versions? It isn't impossible that the more recent interpreters have indeed lowered a system parameter somewhere, too.

When you say "path", are you using User Paths? You can check the system paramenters for MaxUPathCache on each printer to see if there is a difference.
