hi,

I had always thought that sending a .ps file straight to an HP laserjet 5 would produce output according to the PostScript commands that the file contains.

The printer is set to auto for the right setting.

Where is my misapprehension of what is meant to occur?

Well, you don't really explain what the problem is! What is printing?- nothing? PostScript code? PostScript errors? garbage? or what?

Have you checked that the PostScript you have is legitimate?, eg you could put it in Distiller and see if it creates a good pdf, or view it in GhostScript, or print to another ps printer.

One thought.... especially check that your ps starts with %!. If it doesn't the printer won't know the stream is ps, so it won't kick over to ps mode and would then most likely print the ps codes out. Jim Brown,

Another thought... how are you sending the file to the printer? Are you sure it's not going through another driver for example?

I guess if you're using say Dos's copy to lpt, or lpr from Dos or Unix to a net printer the ps should be getting thru' unadulterated. But if you're in Windows somewhere perhaps a driver's gotten hold of it somehow and that's screwing you? Jim Brown,

Note:

HP usually invokes the Postscript interpreter with a @PJL COMMENT Emulation Postscript not %!PS-Adobe.
