Printing a 40-page booklet, inserts extra page

I am using Adobe CS4 InDesign. I am a brand new user, and have previously been used to Publisher 2007. This is a huge step for me.

I am creating a 40-page booklet to be printed 2-up saddle-stitch. I am using legal-size paper, folded in half. 4 pages to each legal sheet. So 4-pages each in a 10-page booklet is 10 pages. I should be fine there.

In the Pages layout, it says I have 40 pages in 21 spreads. 1 page on the top is the front cover and 1 page on the bottom is the back cover and 19 double-page spreads in between. Pages 2 and 39 are the respective inside covers. Page 1 is aligned on the right and page 40 is aligned on the left. It should be printing fine, I would think.

But in the Print Booklet-Preview Pane, it gives a message that it has added 1 blank page to creat the booklet, and it was added before page one, so I now have a blank back cover, my back cover is now page 3. The nside covers and page layouts are all wonky now.

A few more items of interest, all pages have both Allow Document Pages to Shuffle and Allow Selected Spreads to Shuffle checked.

A side note. When you open the cover, I have an inside cover page, then title, next I have a blank page, ToC, then another blank, Preface, then a blank and Chapter 1. Would this have anything to do with it? It shouldnt, as these blank pages are actual pages in the layout.

I am at a total loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about the

Allow Document Pages to Shuffle, and
Allow Selected Spreads to Shuffle

They are nothing to do with the print booklet feature.


What's probably happening with the Print Booklet is that there is a blank page - with absolutely nothing on it.

If there are blank pages then place a coloured box on the page, go to Window>Effects and change the Transparency to 0%

Now go to the Print Booklet and choose the options. It should work just fine.


I don't know why the print booklet won't recognise blank pages to be honest. But when I do the above it works fine.

But don't leave those there, perhaps put them on another Layer (windows>layers) and then you can turn off that layer when you're not using the print booklet feature.


Allow Pages to Shuffle and Allow Selected Spreads to shuffle:

These are options for aranging the pages. If you have a double page spread you may not want those pages to be able to move. So to stop you accidently moving those pages to ones that are not spreads then you can select both spreads and choose turn off the check mark for "Allow Selected Spreads to Shuffle"

If you turn off the Allow Pages to Shuffle then you will be able to place pages beside each other, e.g., if you are doing a 6 page dl, you wouldn't necesarrily want all pages as facing pages.

So you can move up to 10 pages to be beside each other - for doing specialist folding brochures like trifolds, gatefolds, dl's etc.

That is way more information than I requested, and so much that I didn't know. I went to the offending page and put in a white-filled box, which won't print, since it's white. It worked! Thanks!

It is very odd that InDesign doesn't recognize that a user would want a completely blank page. Oh well. Knowledge is Power.

I had this same request posted on Adobe's Forums, but no response after almost a week. I won't be going there again.

Glad you're sorted. It's very strange why InDesign doesn't honour the blank pages in Print Booklet - yet it inserts it's own in very odd places.

Very weird.
