win xp pro with Canon i450 printer

I installed the printer correctly and all was well. I am not sure what i did, it was a while back. Had something to do with page size or some setting. Bottom line is that text docs are fine in win text docs and wordperfect. However, in windows wordpad the printer wont print the first approx 5 or 6 characters down the whole left side. I have to move all the text over manually to print out what i need. As long
as i leave the first 5 or 6 character spaces blank i am ok, so i have been doing that for a long time, lol.

Is there a way to fix this short of a re-install as the install of the Canoni450 is a bit tricky and tedious so i would like to avoid that if possible. I am struggling with a trojan so i may have to reformat and start over again anyway, but, again, if i can avoid that, then i also would like to fix this printer problem too.

thanks

Sounds like the "tabs" and "margins" need to be reset.

Does a "Test Print" come out ok? You'd expect this to print to the margins as defined by the printer, its driver and your selected paper size. If your print in Wordpad is nearer to the edges of the paper, then I'd suggest you need to redefine the margins within that programme.

I forgot to mention that setting the margins is what got me in trouble. And when i set them back it only works for text and w\perfect but not for wordpad. I tried that for wordpad as well, just wont work. I should have mentioned that part originally, sorry. Its been this way quite a while.

This printer, although a good one, doesnt have a test option.

I'm very surprised to hear you say there's no test print facility for this Canon printer... I've never come across a printer yet that didn't get this facility available under W2K or XP. Usually right click on the relevant printer icon and select Properties, and the General tab has a "Print Test Page button on the lower right hand side. Does Windows provide a driver or are you using software supplied by Canon? Does the documentation with the Canon specifically say it has drivers suitable for XP? Have you looked at Canon's website for a more up-to-date driver?

ROGER - G0AOZ.

ok, i found it, and the test page came out fine, which means it printed from a text doc rather than wordpad.

I am using canons drivers for xp, this is a fairly new printer, think they came out about 2 to 3 yrs ago. Good printer, too, with great reviews.
Its just that i messed up the settings putting the settings back where they started just isnt good enough for wordpad, even though its good enuf for text docs and wordperfect too.

I am lazy. Im sure if i uninstalled and re-installed that would take care of it. But sometimes doing that causes you to lose another hour or 2 trying to install the darn printer, sometimes its a cinch. I know it was a cinch first time around but i have learned not to expect the same treatment second time, lol.
Just lazy here! but at least im honest about it.

Can't remember when I last used Wordpad - it was THAT long ago... I don't have a Canon printer here, so maybe this is of no consequence, but I notice my copy of Wordpad in XP has some significant sized margins which are presumably the default, as I've never used that programme on this particular computer. It is also set in millimetres - I was brought up on good ol' feet and inches - is there likely to be any confusion here? I also note that under View, Options, "Rich Text" appears to be the default. Have you changed any of the Word wrap options under Rich Text, or indeed any of the others?

If necessary I could note down the defaults for you as I have them within Wordpad here, if that's of any help...

ROGER - G0AOZ.

My margins are all 1 millimeter.
Seems to me i messed around with the margins at the time i first had the problem and it made it worse, no matter what margin i set.
I imagine i have to re-install the printer to fix this, just hoping to find a way not to, lol.

Yoiks! If we're really talking left and right side margins I'm not surprised you've got problems with just ONE MILLIMETRE!!! You're asking the printer to work almost right to the very edge of the paper - not a good idea.

Suggest you start with these as "default" in Wordpad's Page Setup:-

Paper Size: A4 (or whatever size you usually use).
Source: Automatically selected
Orientation: Portrait
Margin LEFT: 31.8 mm
Margin RIGHT: 31.8 mm
Margin TOP: 25.4 mm
Margin BOTTOM: 25.4 mm

In the View, Options, Rich Text select "Wrap to window".

See if that's of any help...

Well, i have had that prob for a few years now and just lived with it. But I am certain i tried changing the margins before and no good ever came of it.
Thats why i posted the prob, but this time it worked!
So thanks very much.
I will usually beat a problem to death before asking for help and i was certain i did that in this case, but, lo and behold, a simple parameter change and im good to go.
Probably others didnt post the obvious as it was too obvious! But you and micker377 both did.

thanks again!!

Now, if only i can solve my other issue I wont have to re-install or reformat !!!

Now with this prob it cant be something obvious as i have system restore disabled, goback off, and i have run all kinds of av,spyware, trojan prog, and a few of some, and dozens of others. My computer is the cleanest its been since installation, adaware says i am clean, norton says clean, RAV on-line scan says im clean, spybot, hijack this, all say im clean.
Yet my computer locks up a few times every 10 hours, in task mgr you can see explorer running over 90% non-stop. Only thing i can do is reboot or sign off as admin and come back on. Otherwise computer is locked up tight.

Sounds like a trojan but it cant be found!

The only comment I'd make on your other thread is that if you've not got SP2 in place it might be worthwhile putting it on. But do a sweep of your hard disk on another known clean machine first. If I remember correctly, SP2 blocks holes for Blaster and Sasser...

ROGER - G0AOZ.

I usually wait til a sp has been on the market for about a year before i install it, that gives them time to fix what needs fixing on it. So its about time for me to do so.
I have the slipstream prog and already slipstreamed sp1 and 2 onto a copy of my xp pro exec for when i do a complete reformat, which, by the looks of it, will be soon.

I have given the two people who were correct a star. It may be considered by someone to be not that big a prob and that someone may want to condemn these stars. The way i look at it, they earned them and often they earn a star and dont get one, so things tend to even out.

thanks for the help guys.

To GOAZ:
what i use wordpad for is when i am on the net and see some info i like that cant be copied then i just do a screen capture and put it in a wordpad file. I guess you would do the same but capture it to something like easy office or m\soft or wordperfect office? Is that the reason you dont use wordpad or am i missing something?

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Thanks for the aforegoing... If I want to capture anything I usually use either Notepad or Word, but Wordpad would I'm sure be just as good.

Just a further thought on your problem - I take it you've run MSCONFIG to see what's in startup.

ROGER - G0AOZ.

But notepad doesnt do screen captures, only wordpad and the office suites, that i know of.

Sure, i've done all the standard stuff and then some and then some more, but you have to ask to be sure!

Msconfig has been my best friend since win98 and i found it right away in win xp, one of the first things i did was look for msconfig, regedit, and ipconfig or xp version of same.
