printer very slow

bought a new HP jet printer/copier/scanner at weekend, connected to old PC. According to box prints up to 10 pages per minute we are only getting 1 page per 10 mins, where are we going wrong? Using windows 98. previous printer been uninstalled was an Epson and never any problem with speed. Followed online trouble shooter but only answer to problem concerns file size which is not applicable to our problem

Hi,
What type of conection do you have between the Printer and the PC?
If its anything other than USB or even USB 2 then the data transfer rates will be a lot slower that that which is written on the box.

Since the previous printer didn't have a problem with speed, then I can think of 3 things:

1) Incorrect or corrupt driver
2) If it's a parallel port (not USB), then incorrect setting (needs to have at least bi-directional but should be set to ECP/EPP)
3) Spooling issue

First I would try deleting the printer under Start->Settings>Printers and restarting the PC with the printer connected and turned on. Make sure the right driver gets installed per your installation manual.

If that still doesn't work and you don't have a USB printer, reboot into your BIOS and make sure the parallel port setting is either ECP or EPP.

Open the printer properties and go to the advanced section. Look for a setting relating to spooling and change to 'print directly to printer'.

Also, make sure you are using the proper prnter cable for that printer.
