I have a customer that wants to print a lot of certificates. Currently they buy colour paper blanks of the certs and laser names etc over the top. I can easily print the whole text + background image for them, but the print file is going to be enormous.
I know on some v expensive printers you can send a background image to the printer and it will use that as the background until you tell it to stop. The print file then is much much smaller.
Does anyone know of an office type colour laser that can do this?

All modern LaserJet (and clone) printers which support the PCL5e Page Description Language (PDL) support the idea of PCL macros, which allows you to download (one or more) overlays at the start of a run, then (under the control of PCL sequences in the remainder of the print stream, either call, execute, or set as automatic the require overlay(s).

All but the VERY cheap GDI (i.e. host-based) printers (which don't support PCL directly) should support this feature.

But to use it your application has to download the overlays (as macros) at start of run (or place the overlays on the printer hard disk), and then insert the appropriate call or execute sequences at the appropriate points.

Yikes, that's a bit more complicated than I want. Now that I know the right names to use, I shall look for a printer driver that I can use from vb that will do this for me.
Thanks.
