Hi,

I have a question. I'm running an app that only allows me to print to the default printer. What I'm looking for is some kind of virtual printer that I can set as the default printer. After printing to it I would like it to let me select to which printer the output needs to be sent.

It's a pain to have to change the default printer and restart the app everytime I want the output to go to another printer.

Hope someone can help.

HP have recently released a 'Universal Print Driver' (in PCL5 and Postscript versions), which installs as a printer on your system. To find it, go to and search for 'Universal print driver'.

Having installed it, and set it as the default printer, when it is used, it asks which printer to send the output to.

Possible drawbacks:

(1) I think that it only works with fairly modern LaserJet devices (and probably not the cheap 'host-based' variants like LJ1020, etc)

(2) The fact that it is a 'universal' driver perhaps implies that its output may be less efficient (and/or lack features) compared with the 'native' driver for a particular model of printer.

(3) It's only available in a version suited to Win2K, WinXP or Win2003.
