printer, scanner, copier

I have an HP Officejet R60 printer-scanner-copier (three-in-one) machine. It had been working okay but now when I turn it on to print or copy, a message scrolls across the small window in the machine that says "Scanner system failure. Turn power off and then on again". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the same message always appears. I can't print or copy or scan anything. What could be the problem?
