Why is it printing across a network from one client (win 98) take around one minute to start while, printing from a newer (and more powerful) client XP is painfully slow?

Could there be a problem with the network, hub or software conflict. The printer itself has its own network board.

Any advice would be welcome.

Could be any of those... First I would check with HP and see if there is a newer XP driver. Also you could ping the printer from each location and see if there is a diff. Are you going thru a server or P to P using Standard TCP-IP Port. Wait that would be XP and 2K but 98 doesnt have that. Let me ask it this way, of the two machines in question, are the ports configured the same?

yes port 9100 have to be open to the printer and check the xp firewall that might stop the traffic

Sorry to not be in contact sooner. Is the xp firewall a standard configuration on xp? Would this not totally block the print request, as opposed to slow it down?

Andrew

yes it would just block the port not let any traffic by

make sure port 9100 is open is you use jetdierct
