i am trying to get red hat to print to an epson on an xp machine, the epson is a usb printer. does anybody know what port i should tell redhat that the printer is on and which queue i should use networked cups, networked unix, networked windows smb, networked jet direct? thx

ok thanks i give that a try

I have the same set up and I am in the Networked SMB. But not sure what they are asking.

Workgroup: I understand that one
Server: MACHINE (this is in by default), should I change it?
Share: SHARE (this is by default) it acts like it wants me to change this. What too?
User Name: Do I have to have one?
Password: Do I have to have one?

Thank you for helping a beginner. I love Linux. Just a hell of a learning curve.

yes that is my problem as well. also i put the name of the server machine (i assume it means print server) but when i click apply it just says "server is busy or not responding" etc.. so put IP instead but message changes to IP does not exist? even though th IP on that machine is fixed.

After selecting Networked Windows (SMB), you should see a list of computers with whatever printer that is has attached to it. I noticed that 2k/XP machines rarely appear on the list. If you don't see the machine, then you'll need to specify the printer manually.

Normally you would put your domain name into the workgroup field, but sometimes XP doesn't behave and doesn't authenticate against the domain. What you need to do is put the XP box's computer name in the workgroup field and use the local administrator's username & password. My setup to an XP box named "jack" looked like this:

Workgroup: jack
Server : jack
Share : dfx5k
User Name: administrator
Password : beanstalk

If all goes well, you should see an additional entry in the list like:

* jack
|___ dfx5k (specified)

Continue your setup selecting this printer.

Well some of that helped. I got further than I have since starting. Now I get this message "Unable to connect to Samba host, will try again in 60 seconds."

I am sure it is because I have to do something with SAMBA server. Not sure what though. Let me give you my configurations and maybe that will help.

The computer I am typing from right now has a 80g hardrive. I partitioned 1/2 for XP and the other half for RedHat 9. I have another computer in my son's room. It has solely XP OS. I attached the printer by USB to his computer. I can print to the printer from my computer in XP. The printer is a HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL. I have them networked using a Belkin router.

I read somewhere that I need to do something with the SAMBA server to get it to recognize the printer. Is that true. Boy, I like Linux but it is not easy to learn. Got use to Windows plug and play too much. Trying to get rid of Windows. Anyway, this is long. Thank you for the help so far.

It would be nice if you could give a proper account of what you have done, where you are stuck at and what errors are you getting.

i will go through step by step
System settings > Printing (box appears )
Clicked the new icon (has a printer on it)
Add a new print queue wizard comes up I click forward,
Name for this queue I enter Epson
Description I left blank
Drop down box I select Networked Windows (SMB)
The bedroom computer comes up but the printer is on a downstairs computer so I click Specify and a list of Textboxes appear so here is what I put, if it is in brackets I didn’t put it.
Workgroup: “jsttech” (this is the com downstairs with printer)
Server: “jsttech”
Share : “ep1” (not sure where your dfx5k came from, I assume you made it up)
Username: “Tony”
Password: ” ” (left blank as there is no password for this computer)

Now I click ok the box goes off the screen then reappears after about half a second, not sure why, there is no error message. I will enter a password see what that does.
Password: “tony”
Same happens again?
Stumped now as I don’t know why it is doing this.
Ok think it must mean my root password
Password: “myrootpassword”
Same happens again the box goes off then back again. Ok don’t get mad tony I tell myself just think it through so I sit and think, I cannot think of anything. I sit tapping the keyboard but mind still blank, I think maybe that Linux is trying to authenticate my password but my XP box is saying sod off that’s wrong and is laughing to itself or even at me. Ok getting a touch paranoid now so I decide to leave it and come back to it later, hope this helps.

The SHARE field points to the name that you shared your printer out on. "dfx5k" is the share name that I gave to the Epson DFX-5000 Wide Format Dotmatrix Printer that is connected to the XP box. Make sure that ep1 is the correct share name given on your XP box.

Is the the user "tony" an administrator on the XP box? Haven't really used XP before and the one that I connect to was setup by someone else.

Is the the user "tony" an administrator on the XP box ans: Yes.

Make sure that ep1 is the correct share name given on your XP box. Ans: No

ok i will change that.
I dont believe it its only worked. I thank you very much for your patience and I have learnt a lot about connecting a printer on a windoze network
