All,

just started a new gig, trying to figure out the printer configuration.

I have a printer that I can ping using name printerA1. If I look at the port on the print server, it was created using the name, not the ip address, but the name reads printerA. PrinterA is not a pingable name, so I don't understand how that works.

Any ideas? shouldn't the name being used for the tcp/ip port be a pingable name?

It doesn't have to be. It is just the name of the port not really much more. If you try to edit the port you should see that the ip address is configured.
