Hi there ,

I have a Lexmark inkjet printer Z22. I
installed the printer and the cable settings and
everything is fine. But when I try and print the
documents, it says printer not ready. When I called
the Lexmark people, they tried to trouble shoot for 2
hours and finally they said that the LPT1 port is not
working and I got to show it to someone to check the
port. I even reinstalled the printer driver and modem driver (connected to COM1 communications port ), but it's
still not working. I am not sure whether it's a
hardware or a software problem.

Thanks ,
Udit.

Look to see if there is an exclamation mark against the port in Device manager.

Look in the bios to make sure that the printer port has not been disabled.

Change the bios settings for different types of port, ie EPP, ECP, etc and check printer at each stage.

Boot to Dos and type
copy c:\autoexec.bat prn:
and see if it prints (assuming there is an autoexec.bat, but any small text file will do). If it does, then it's probably a Windows driver issue.

If you have an AT style case, check the internal ribbon connector is attached, and the right way 'round, (if you have an ATX case it's attached to the motherboard).

Paul, a side question for you please, I tried the printing from dos suggestion you mentioned and it worked when I typed in the following at the C:\Windows> prompt - - - 'copy C:\autoexec.bk prn:'. When I created a notepad file for further experimentation, and called it prntdos.txt, why does this not work as well- - -
C:\Windows>copy C:\Mydocu~s\comput~y\prntdos.txt prn:
I also renamed the file to have 8 letters, (prntdoss)
The full name of the path is My Documents,Computer Study, prntdoss.txt

'Doslessly', fenix

Fenix,
Dos isn't very clever when it comes to finding files, that's why there is a 'path' statement for autoexec.bat where all the directories were listed so Dos could find programs. I suspect this is something to do with the problem, to confirm it, copy the file in question to the root directory ie C:\ and see if it works. If it does, then that's the reason, if it doesn't then post back.
