These are Lexmark/Unisys 9716 printers and when trying to print a particular .pdf file we get this error

invalid access, offending command:StartData

It starts printing page 1 of 3, but you only get the first half of the page, then an error report page. The entire document prints perfectly on an HP laserjet, however.

Thanks in advance for any help. I am not sure if this is s printer issue or a formatting issue in Adobe.

Are you using PostScript drivers? What PostScript level do the two printers support?

OK, the printer model is actually a UDS9716, and below is the only link I have found concerning it's technical setup.

One of the other guys here confirmed that these printers are using PCL6 drivers. I haven't found anything on WinXP compatibility, which may be an issue since we recently upgraded to XP.

It sounds like it is the driver since the same document prints OK on an HP laserjet. Any idea what we can do about the driver?

Any further input on this issue?

Wait a minute, before I go off the hook with this driver thing...is there a chance there is some sort or acrobat formatting issue that could be causing this? This seems to be happening with just one document out of many that we use.

Maybe. Acrobat 6.0 uses some compression filters that not all printers will support. But I only know about PostScript, not PCL. When you press "print", the print stream is produced by a driver, which uses a printer defintion file to output something your printer can understand.

My assumption was that you were using an older PostScript printer but that the driver was ouputting "newer" PostScript that the printer didn't understand.

So long story short: I don't have a clue.

Hey everybody,

Guess what? We find an XP postscript driver for this printer and guess what? It works! So thanks tgreer for steering us in the right direction!
