I have been given boxes of colored printer ink which I probably take me years to use. Can I mix them and in what quantities to make black ink?

No.

If do you will end up with dirty brown, that is why you have a black ink.

Most printers use sealed cartridges which are a pain to refill and not worth the hassle (I have tried).

Flog the ink on eBay and buy cheep recycled black cartridges off the web!

Pete.

I know it can be done because an olivetti printer that I once had could only hold one cartridge at a time and if you were printing a color document with some black text it would make it.

But is it worth the hassle?

If you don't want to sell them on e-bay - how about.

Using the blue ink for normal printing.
using the pink ink to write to your significant other
Using the red ink to write to your bank manager
Use the yellow ink on sunny days
Use the green ink for gardening tips

LOL

Seriously - assuming they are coloured Cyan, Magenta & Yellow then 33.333333333333 % of each may work. But if they are Red/Green/Blue - you will, as njwcad says - get mucky brown.

-Love the Idea of different colours for different documents but I would like to know what I could use for my college assignments?

Loretta ;-)

Thanks everyone for the fun advice.
But I have been experimenting with the inks and came up with
one part Yellow,
four parts Magenta &
three parts Cyan.

This give an almost charcoal grey which for me will do nicely.

Way ta go, I was going to suggest you simply try a mixture out, but then i thought well maybe someone has already tried that, doesnt work, stupid idea, lol, so i didnt.

I was hoping you would find a way!

WhiteStar1,

Maybe you could trade some of them to your college friends in exchange for paper.
