Printer icon does not show up in system tray when printing

When the user selects File Print, the printer icon does not notify him in the system tray that he has printed a job.

This worked when I first gave him the machine, then stopped, then started working again.

I have reinsalled the printer numerous times, stopped/started the spool etc.

I am pretty lost. It is Windows XP Pro, running on a domain.

You might have to check that you have the latest updated XP drivers for your printer to get it to appear in the Notification Area. You could check to see if it is selected to be always hidden in the Task Bar properties under the Hide Inactive Icons setting.

If you select the File menu in Printer and Faxes, and then select Server Properties, then Advanced. You have the following that you can select.

Show informational notifications for local printers.

This displays the status of print jobs in a pop-up window, when printing to a stand-alone network printer or to a printer attached directly to your computer. This pop-up window appears near the Notification Area of the user who sent the print job.

This pop up appears immeadiately above the printer icon.

I checked the inactive icon setting previously, and there is nothing.

I checked his Server Properties settings, and they are all set corrctly, the same as mine are. The printer is on the domain, we are using the same drivers. He has the latest I know for sure because he just got his new machine last week, the same time as i did.

He is not getting the icon at all for any print job, although he only prints to the network, he has no local printer.

Thanks again Linney, but those did not fix it either. Im going to update the BIOS and then install SP2, I wanted to avoid it, because of some custom apps we run, but I think that is my last option, and I also think that will fix it, even though it may break some other apps, the user will have to decide how important it is.
