XP Home SP2, with HP D2460 inkjet printer. Printer appears to work fine for several days, then seemingly all of a sudden becomes "paused". No error messages, everything else appears to work fine, and machine is squeaky clean as regards viruses, etc.

I have tried changing USB cables, changing USB ports, tried downloading the latest driver from the HP site, and run HP's Diagnostic programme which gave it a clean bill of health.

Cannot find anything relating to this in HP's FAQs. Anyone any clues as to what provokes the printer to pause like this?

[ol][li]Have you tried with a different computer altogether?[/li]
[li]When you tried updating the drivers and all, did you first uninstall the printer, and uninstall the print driver from the print server settings in Windows?[/li]
[li]Did you clean it with alcohol? Is that why squeaky clean? [wink][/li]
[li]Is a certain print job freezing up each time? Possibly a really large document being sent to print spooler that is in turn seemingly freezing everything up?[/li]
[li]What application are you printing from when the problem occurs? I know at work, I've frozen up the print spool for a high-dollar printer (enterprise multifunction deal) by trying to print a somewhat sizeable PDF document from Adobe Acrobat. When I asked about it from the IT folks, I was told that Adobe Reader has caused some issues like that in the past. Sure enough, so long as I didn't try to print long PDF files from within Reader, I've had no other issues.[/li]
[li]When's the last time you gave the old machine a good kick? - Printer, that is. [wink][/li][/ol]

***Please note those items with the wink by them, and DO NOT TRY THEM. [LOL]***

Thanks kjv1611. Computer's already had the "kick and throw" test, and the printer's been through the intense wash cycle in the dishwasher! [elephant2] (Only joking folks...)

Haven't tried it on a different machine, but may well have to, if this problem persists.

Yes, driver uninstalled, machine rebooted, then latest driver installed.

The last print job it paused on was a simple three page document in Word, which contained nothing other than text. That particular document has been successfully print before and after the "pausing" problem. Other multiple Word documents print out successfully on this setup.

Any other suggestions?

Well, one last one: get a new printer. [wink]
