my printer does not print when another networked computer is turned off only when it is on. It sounds like I am sharing the printer from the other users computer. I am not sure? I cant add the printer unless his computer is on. I try to get the ip address of my printer but it does not show up on the test page or under properties. Any suggestions. Hp deskjet 940c

Is their anyway to go around this issue.

It *really* sounds like an IP conflict.

Try this:

Turn the printer off, and ping the IP of the computer that has to be off to print.

Now, turn that computer off, turn the printer back on, and ping the same IP.

If you get pings both times, you have the same IP on both units.

If you can't figure out what the IP of the printer is, try changing the IP on the workstation and see if that resolves it.

Just my $.02

If you are using a shared printer, then yes their computer does have to be on. Generally it does not have to be logged in, just turned on. Sometimes I've told users to log in once, then log off to be sure their computer is recognized by the network.

How to tell if the printer is shared? Go look at the printer cables. If the printer's cable connects to a computer, then it is shared on the network through that computer. If the cable connects to a network switch or hub, then it is either connected directly to the network or a print server.

I have one printer that is both shared (for DOS programs) and networked with JetDirect (for Windows-aware programs). Usually, though, it is set up one way or the other, not both.

I have reversed the share and it has solved my problem
thanks everyone

You may want to consider getting an external JetDirect or print server. That way the printer plugs directly into the network and no computer needs to be on 24/7 to support it.

just my 2 cents
