print to a selected printer tray

On red hat linux 2.4.7-10, using lp or lpr to print to an HP-8000 printer.

How can I specify which print tray my job should print to, I tried to follow some man pages but even if a tray is specified by -o tray3 my print job still prints only to the default tray in my case tray2.

I guess I'm missing something (simple?), any help please?
