Anyone have any ideas? I am trying to get a Samsung ML1210 to work with an HP170X Print server. We have SCO 5.0.6 . The test button on the Print Server won't work with this printer either. I can print from one of our Win 2000 servers just fine all day long through this box. The printer will do nothing at all when I try to send a print job directly to it either, from Unix, which is strange. Unix reports that it got the print job, but it mysteriously just disappears when I look at the print spooler for jobs.

thanks Pilot1

Yo Pilot1, my first guess would be to say that you do not have 'lpd' support running on your Windoze box. Also, I have occasionally had to set up 'printcap' printers on SCO to get print over to the Microsoft world.

I am printing to all my print servers using the Unix and Windows systems separately. I'm not using lpd for Unix. I configure the printers in the unix system using Scoadmin Print and configure printers there. I also have Windows Servers setup with print shares also.

In your original post you say that you have an HP print server.

". I'm not using lpd for Unix. I configure the printers in the unix system using Scoadmin Print and configure printers there. "

If not lpd what protocol are you attempting to use to print from the unix system?

I'm not familiar with the HP170x. Is it set up as an SMB or netware only print server?

The HP 170x uses IP... As a side note, the 170 might be trying to print using PCL or PS. If you hold the print server test button in for a bit, the blink pattern on the lights will vary for the three different languages to print out the test page. It's probable that the Samsung doesn't support the default language (might be PS for all I know). I know that I print to 170s till the cows come home under 5.0.5 using port 9100 ( I think I've used the standard lpd process also ). If you have any more details, it might help.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread. Thanks for the responses though. I think I got the lpd response wrong though. I use lpd for Unix, not for Windows. Not sure if that makes sense either! Otherwise, Megabitman hit what I think the problem is. Is that configurable via the Web Applet? I didn't see anything. I kinda get the feeling it has to do with the printer control language between the box and the printer, because it won't even test print. I'll have to try that solution when I get back to our other office. I just love the dependability of those 170X HP Boxes. In the last 3 years I can remember unplugging maybe two of them. to reset them, after they were up for month's! I use a very generic print filter for the OKIDATA 320's and the standard HPLJ filter for the HP laser's.

When setting up sco to print to an hp jet direct printer, shouldn't you be using the scoadmin hp printer manager?
All it requires is tcp/ip connectivity and a printer type.

That's how I set the printers up, but the problem seems to be between the paralell interface of the printer and print server (Printer Control Language)
