I have a client needing some assistance with VMware, and I have very little experience with it. Before I start charging him for my time, I need some help from the Experts here.

He has the free server version--I think it is GSX Server. He wants his clients to be able to connect to the server from a remote location and have their printer automagically show up on the server, so they can print back to the remote printer (local to them).

I have not looked at the setup yet. Is this possible with the free server, or will he need to upgrade? How would I go about setting this up?

GSX Server was changed to VMWare Server and is a free product. When you say connect how will they connect? I would guess via terminal services, if thats the case all printer drivers need to be preinstalled on the server before they connect. The printers dont need to be installed just the drivers. When the end user connects to the TS the printer will automagically map and install. A few speed bumps to this could popup. GP, the rdp connector, or the rdp client could be set to not allow these printers to map/install dynamically. If they plan to connect to the server via VPN or some other method you could use login scripts, just depends a lot on other info at that point. Are they domain members and what not.
