Print server rights for XP client

2003 Server - Print server.
Printer configured for Everyone & Guests: Print, manage document rights are granted.

Client: XP

Server is member of an NT4 domain (soon to be AD migrated...)
Client is not a domain member, and so only local user account sessions are run on client.

I have installed a printer with:

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /ga /n\\2k3server\printer_share_name

It appears in all sessions' printers window, but 'Access Denied: unable to connect' is shown in the window.

The above command with switch /s also says accessd enied.

Can I change anything on the server to allow remote printing from the non-domain client, or do i HAVE to join PC to the domain (bearing in mind that the local accounts will continue to be used, we want to avoid using a domain user account on the PC.)

If the printer is a network attached printer, you could try printing directly to the IP address of the printer. Run the "Add a printer" wizard and select the "Local printer attached to this computer" option (do not select the "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer" option). On the next screen select "Create a new port:" and select the option for the "Standard TCP/IP Port". When the wizard comes up to add the printer port, select next. Enter the IP address of the target printer and the port name should be automatically filled in. Finish out the add port wizard and then finish out installing the printer in the add printer wizard.

Another way you could probably allow this would be to add the non-domain accounts as local users to the Print Server. Create local user accounts on the Print Server that have the same user names and passwords of the non-domain user accounts and allow them access to the printer.

OK. I can try that...
But I can now access the printer via the server (i created the same local account & password)

But your solution wont make the printer universally installed......

And if i run an application via a service (ie autoexnt), then it runs with the local system account rights...
How can I give this account printer access?
