I am in the process of setting up remote access to a AIX server located in Toronto. I am located in Indiana. We are using Contivity VPN client to establish the connection to their Windows network. We then use Tiny Term Plus to establish connection to their AIX server. We have all of this functioning fine. We can look at their datatbases on the AIX and run through their data base menu. Our problem is printing. Is their a way to set up within AIX a printer definition so we can print reports from the database system to our connected PC in Indiana? The version of AIX is 5.2. The version of TinyTerm is 4.04.0557. The software is called MTMS which is a manufacturing ERP package.

Ok. Let me put it this way. whether it is AIX or Windows. if you can ping that printer from the AIX server or Windows server (means reachable) then you can print (ofcourse providing that you installed its driver).

To create a printing Q in AIX do the following (I will consider an HP printer Conected to an hpjetdirect box):

1. smitty printers
2. Go to Print Spooling -> Add a Print Queue
3. Choose hpJetDirect -> Hewlett Packard
4. Choose hplj-3 (for example)
5. Choose Do Not Make this system a Bootp/Tftp server
6. Fill in the new queue name in one of the fields specified according to the language of the printed document (PCL, PostScript, HP-GL/2)
7. Fill in the HostName and the port.

That's it, You've just created a new Queue on AIX

You can print using:

# qprt -PQname document.txt

You can check the status of the print Queue using:

# qchk -PQname

I hope this will help much :)

Regards,
Khalid
