Some background/history:

On Alpha (and VAX) VMS, I can set up a generic print que that has 1 or more real printers behind it. IE

Generic que name: Print_pool
Actual printers that Print_pool prints to: printer1, printer2, etc. ...

On Tru64 Unix, I can get this same functionality with Advanced Printing Software (APS).

I now have a pending request to set this up on AIX 5L. Does AIX support this type of print que setup? If so, is it "built" in to the OS or must I load some software package - like APS on Tru64?

Any info on how to do this or where to find this type of software would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, AIX has a brilliant spooling system that's installed by default.
I haven't done printing for a while but if you go to you can find good documentation on print setup.

Have you got printing to work? I think it's just a question of adding an extra device.

Cheers

Yes you can do this on AIX. First create the queue (generic print) with one physical printer running "smit spooler" and then choose "Add Print Queue" option. After you can add another printer to the same queue running "smit spooler" again and choosing "Add an Adicitional Printer to an Existing Queue" option.

Bye.
