I have a G4 iMac running OS X 10.1.4 and a Lexmark X83 printer/copier/scanner. The printer works fine when used from an OS X application and will also work if I boot up in OS 9.2 but will not work when I use a Classic app after booting up in OS X. When the Classic mode finishes launching, I get a pop-up notification that the X83 Print Monitor has quit. After this, no printing is possible from a Classic app. I also am unable to restart the print monitor. I installed the drivers provided by the printer manufacturer and did not encounter any problems during the installation. I also tried booting up from 9.2 and installing the drivers without OS X running but that didn't fix it either. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing my problem?

Well, the extension is a likely (nay, probable) cause.
While in X set the Mac to start up in 9 and hold down thge shift key when restarting. If the Mac boots without crashing it's a pesky extension conflict. And the cause is your print monitor... It seems that way doesn't it? Remove it, trash finder prefrences too... in fact, trash anyhting to do with background printing. It has always been a pain and causes more problems than its worth. And what better time to take a break than while waiting for foreground printing. Don't even concern yourself with the whys. It really isn't worth it. And if the Mac still crashes under 9... do the shift start-up again and delete (or remove to the desktop) any print preference files you can find. And try again.

Believe me. I have spent too many hours digging people out of this ditch... I'm the techie at a high school with 125 users (not including students) to look after. This used to be a daily occurence until I banned its use. And I am usually so calm... Hmmmm.

Regards

Tony
