I just walked into a mess.

I just inherited Sysadmin duties of a SCO 4.5 system that will not print to remote printer (over the network connected to an Equinox terminal server).

I get an error about once a day at different times "ssty: tcgetattr failed: Inappropriate I/O controller operation (Error 25)".

About the same time the printers stopped working, telnet started cutting users off while in a session. Telnetd is not dying, b/c some users can remain connected, while others are booted (even root).

Noone has any of the software. And they don't think it has had any work done on it in the last 4 years. Any ideas on where I should start in this mess? I have a strong inclination to reload/upgrade to something newer. But noone wants to spend $!

Thanks for any suggestions!!

First, there's no such thing as SCO 4.5

Start with uname -X to learn what you really have and visit for other things you need to know for your new responsibilities.

The stty error is because someone left a line in an interface script that tries to set serial characteristics on a network device. See
That's unrelated to telnet issues.

I doubt you need to reload anything although you may need to apply supplements or change a nic card etc. You need to examine system logs, examine sar output (see ) to see if any resource stravation is causing this. zYou didn't mention what the app is the users are running, but that might be useful information also.

Thanks for the advise and insight! I found out it was 5.0.4. And it appears the problem was caused by a switch going bad and someone changing a workstation to have the same IP as the server.
The app they are running is JED. It looks like I'm going to have to take care of this, can you suggest a good book for this version (do they still publish them)?
Thanks Again! If there is anything I can do to help ya, let me know!
