Hi all - had a lot of problems with new 2008 64bit servers and 32bit xp clients and getting printers to work via sharing on the server as they always used to with 2003 servers. There seems to be quite a few ways you can go about setting it up and it's hit and miss - adding the 32bit drivers via print management, or connecting from the 32bit client and adding drivers to get sucked back upto the server, adding the 'additional drivers' from the printer object on the server - etc etc. The most annoying one so far was a HP 2600 which is allegedly a "host printer" so not designed for sharing (sounds backwards to me, it's the network print serving itself which should be the 'extra feature', not the basic ability for a machine to share it).

Anyways my question really was are there are better/worse printers for working in such an environment? Any recommendations? There are some brother hl-2700cn printers here that don't even have identical version 32/64bit drivers on the server (one of the many 'tips' for getting it to work) yet work fine when shared, but they now need to be replaced. I've also tried things like HP unviersal drivers btu often even if a printer sets up as 'shared' the result is when you print to it nothing comes out.

Later this week I even have to setup some win7 64bit clients on a 2003 32bit server, so I'll get to fnid out how good/bad it is trying to do it the other way round! D:

The HP UPD will work fine only for the printers that they have listed as supported: http://h20338.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/344305-0-0-225-121.html

The name of both 32 and 64 bit drivers does need to be exactly the same.

HP is a real pain in the *ss on the smaller printers. I have some LJ1022n printers... They come with a network card built in, yet HP doesn't produce a network driver for them. I ended up using the built in LaserJet III driver. To do this you only need the 64 bit driver on the server and the clients have the 32 bit built in and will not upload it.

Reverse situation should be about the same.

Thanks for the reply. I checked that list and found the 2605 is featured but not the 2600, I'm sure the 2600's should work with 2605 drivers - infact I think I tested them, but still I couldn't get them to print when shared through a 64bit 2008 server :( As for matching drivers, I have a site with brother laserjets that worked first time but driver version numbers are DIFFERENT 64/32 ... go figure! I have had HPs work first time with matching 64/32 drivers by doing things like going to "sharing/additional drivers" and adding the 32bit ones while on a 64bit 2008 server (I always avoid the UPD, don't want bloatware or popups on print!) so I guess it's just certain models that give grief. But with so much grief I wondered if anyone had master expereince to dish out.

There is also the possibility that someone might have a 64bit client on a 32bit server but I guess it should work/fail the same way. I certainly have that trouble when it comes to win7 clients and 2003 servers - aka wipe that 7 back to xp! :/

Unfortunately 2600 and 2605 are probably different printers in HP's eyes... I had the same problem between 1300 and 1305 printers. As for the rest, you have it right. Just be persistent, it does work. Sometimes you have to go with generic drivers if you can't find manufacturer drivers.

On the Brother side of the house, have you verified that they didn't package the 32 and 64 bit drivers together?

For HP UPD, you can install it without the ancillary software by unzipping the package and installing the drivers only using the driver installation wizard in the Microsoft Print Management Console.
