I hope someone can help me with this ... it's driving me up the walls! I bought a 20Gb hard drive to bolster up the rather pitiful 4Gb HD that originally came in my machine (this was about 4, maybe 5 years ago). I tried to install it as a primary slave ... hooked it up, pluged it in and started the computer. Ran the BIOS settings - the new drive appeared straight away. Thinking that was encouraging I proceeded to load windows, but when I looked in MY COMPUTER there was no sign of the new drive. Looked in the DEVICE MANAGER, same deal ... no sign.

Does anyone know of issues surrounding drive recognition with WinME, or is there something else I'm missing? Just in case you need them, machine specs are CELERON 333MHz, 128Mb RAM (old type), 4Gb HD (partitioned to C & D drives) plus one new 20Gb hard drive which the OS won't acknowledge! _____________________________________________________

You may have to boot to a startup floppy disk and run fdisk and partition it before it can be recognized and formatted. Sometimes fdisk will run at a command prompt under Windows.

download this ME super boot format partion floppy now then if it still doesn't recongnize it your motherboard needs a new bios flash to read that larger harddrive you did say its 4/5 years old back then they only could read about a 8 gig..

Thanks to both of you but I got it sorted days ago. Berton hit the nail on the head ... it needed partitioned and formatted. Thanks for replying anyways! _____________________________________________________
