Hi Guys,
I am a newbie and am stuck with a problems!

I am maintaining E6500 server running solaris 9.

How to determine which is my primary MAC card and what IP is actually issigned to this card?

Also i want to know how many ram cards are present in my server and which slots are they inserted in?

you can use "ifconfig -a" to view your NIC cards, it will show ip etc.
you can use "prtdiag" normallay found in /usr/platform/sun4u/sbin which will show you all the hardware config + status. It will show you your RAM and how many sticks, how big etc.

Hi Schu,
Thanks for the reply.
I know that ifconfig -a shows all the MAC but how do i know which the the primary one. For example say the server had only one card to start off with, and an IP address was assigned to it during installation, and later i added 4 more cards and assigned four different IP addresses to these new cards. Now ifconfig -a shows total 5 cards and 5 diff IP. Now how do i know which IP was assigned at OS installation.

there is nothing like the "primary" nic, for the OS they are more or less the same level. The Admin is defining the prefered way how to connect to this machine. Usually you would set the defaultroute to the first NIC configured, so just run
# netstat -rn | grep default

BTW: why do you need to know?

Thanks a lot guys.

The problem is that i have to remove one of the NIC cards. and i am worried i may end up removing the Primary MAC.

Anyway thanks a lot for your help.

depending on the OBP ("Bios") parameter "local-mac-adress?", which is boolean, the machine will use the MAC of the NIC (true) or derive it from the hostid (false).
If you remove a NIC and you need the MAC, eg. for licensing, you could set the MAC with ifconfig command to another NIC (btw: you can only change the last 3 bytes)

Best Regards, Franz
