This seeing this line (Primary IDE (Dual fifo)) in the device manger better then the line -
Primary IDE
(without the dual fifo part)?

The machine is question is Win95a ----------------------------------------

Do you see that messsage all the time or in Safe Mode?
Is there a yellow exclamation point beside it?
See if it'll (IF you're in normal mode) let you update the driver from the CD.

It's either running in DOS compatibility mode or the drivers aren't working properly.
The controller manages the primary master slave drive designation in the BIOS

The message is there all the time, there is no yellow mark next to it either, and I'm running in Normal Mode.

I have had the computer for a long time (since '96) and as far as I can remember it has always said "Primary IDE (dual fifo)"

So you are saying that "dual fifo" is not desirable?

PS I have the same thing for my second IDE two "Secondary IDE (dual fifo). ----------------------------------------

Seeing this again, (it's been awhile) I see I should have asked you to better frame your question (the original 1 is not clear at all)...instead I went off on a tangent and gave you a stoopid response. (we won't even go into that!)

I have, however, (if I'm guessing correctly this time on a still not clearly defined question), in my device manager the (dual fifo) designation beside Primary and Secondary controllers...and things seem to be as they should be.

What problem did you have with your computer to lead to think about making a change?
(or are you, like me, an inveterate tweaker?)

Questions about Device Manager itself and a step-by-step walk thru the settings there will be found in this link:

I am a self confessed inveterate tweaker :)

Its my old machine and I am just playing around with it.

Somewhere while web browsing I came across a statement to the effect that seeing the comment "dual fifo" after the IDE listings in the Device Manager was not desirable.

I thought this was strange since having separate input and outputs pipes, which is what I believe the dual fifo refers to, was more not less desirable, so i posted the rather confusing question on here to find out.

Sorry about the confusion. ----------------------------------------

As a recovering dinker myself, I must admit it has long-term positive effects on how your computer runs...'cause in the short term you get it so "tweaked" it doesn't know what to do and how to do it. This leads to you discovering what the setting should have been in the 1st place.

I had so many messes with NT learning how to edit the (OR NOT) registry!

Now my system has XP on it...and it's truly the "dinkers' dream"

I have this problem on a HP Pavilion PII 350 with WIN98SE.

The Primary IDE has a yellow exclamation point beside it.
I guess I am in MS DOS Compatibel mode - but how do I correct this?

It appears when I add a second WD 30GB Hard Drive. The Master HD 30GB is identical. Both Drives work fine without the other attached.

My computer says I have the best driver.

Any suggestions appreciated.

John

The Western Digital drives distinguish between being a Master on a single drive system, or a Master on a dual-drive system.

Look at the Western Digital site for you specific model of both drives; you need to set the jumpers to reflect that they are Master or Slave in a multi-drive setting.
